I think the biggest problem with aiming for the whole Nolan thing is if you take a step back from the whole trilogy Nolan's take of Batman didn't work.
Batman is a 'dark and serious' character for sure but dark and serious means something different in comics than they do in any other medium and even at his most darkest, there is an inherent silliness surrounding Batman which is actually the reason he works.
In a truly straight faced depiction of the world and the horrors that take place in it, a dude in a halloween costume with a magic tool belt would feel out of place but well...Nolan just stripped out all the silliness anyway creating a pretty bland, and fairly typical bunch of action thrillers that then had these random characters dotted around in goofy costumes that felt like they'd just stepped out of an entirely different film. If you watch Batman Begins, when Batman randomly appears in the last third or so of the film, it is pretty much literally like two completely different films stuck together.
You need an ounce of escapism or the thing doesn't work as a cohesive whole, Superheroes are not real (okay there are real superheroes but have you seen how stupid they look? exactly) so stop trying to ground them in reality. The inherent escapist silliness of the comic book medium, even at its most gritty, is the reason that the genre has lasted as long as it has and has been able to adapt to changing times. And yes I am aware I am oversimplifying this but no one wants an 80, 000 book published on this by me.
TL;DR I hate that Nolan has become the inspiration for so many writers and filmmakers when approaching the superhero genre...his approach doesn't. fucking. work.
