The only time the show has come anywhere close to not being as silly is during Ian's back story bits.
However, that's a literal statement. The rest of an episode is still all dancing, King's neverending optimism, and silly monsters. But that 1 and a half minutes worth of back story for Ian is generally played straight and seriously.
