Except that's an unacceptable practice. Approximations have to be made just because one language doesn't have a direct word-for-word translation for the other.
It ruins the point of a translation when you don't actually translate. It's not "Making up a new phrase", it's using the closest approximation of the original phrase's meaning.
I just think it makes so much more sense to insert a translation note rather than dialogue that isn't actually there for the truly impossible to translate and correspond terms. It doesn't ruin anything when you're trying to keep the point or meaning of the dialogue intact. It's like when OT tries to localize euphemisms so that we understand them. They come off even weirder than if you just left them as is like TVN does. And I'm not in this argument to take one group over the other right now, just trying to illustrate a point.
And while subs don't teach you another language or anything like that, I can't help but pick up a couple simple phrases over a period time. However I will say that it kills me to see words that have clear translations in place like "sayonara" "itadakimasu" or "aniki" left untranslated. And it irks me to see terms like "aniki" "tou-san" "ka-san" etc be substituted with the actual proper names of the characters. Just say brother, father, mother.
