They come off even weirder than if you just left them as is like TVN does. And I'm not in this argument to take one group over the other right now, just trying to illustrate a point.
And while subs don't teach you another language or anything like that, I can't help but pick up a couple simple phrases over a period time. However I will say that it kills me to see words that have clear translations in place like "sayonara" "itadakimasu" or "aniki" left untranslated. And it irks me to see terms like "aniki" "tou-san" "ka-san" etc be substituted with the actual proper names of the characters. Just say brother, father, mother.
My primary argument isn't OT vs TVN. I'm just stating my thoughts on the matter. I feel that it's better to give the viewer an approximate translation, rather than leave the Japanese terms and present a one off translation note.
While it is inevitable to pick up basic terms like "Nii-san", it just feels like some subbers assume I know more than they think (This is more prevalent in anime subs, which leave an abundance of Japanese terms in), especially since translation notes aren't always present (For example, one anime gave me a translation note for "Aniki" right off the bat, but didn't for "Aibou", which I only learned later thanks to TVN's Kabuto sub (And subsequently forgot, meaning that, should a show leave "Aibou" untranslated, I'll be left shrugging and hoping context will help me remember
).
