Outside of the Ace and King of each suit being based on the same insect (or arachnid), there really wasn't much in the way of consistency, I don't think.

Not really. It was thrown together really quickly and it shows. The plot and characterization are both a huge mess and, like most Yonemura/Kaneda joints, logic and consistency take a massive backseat to fanwank.
