If I remember correctly, Superman killed Zod in the comics, too. I just assumed that was why it happened. I also thought that the city being leveled was because of a combination of Superman's inexperience in combat, Zod's forces' indifference towards property damage, and the superpowers both sides were endowed with. Aside from that, I also agree with you in that Man of Steel is awesome.
