As for Kenshin's morals, as the series progresses you really see how much he regrets his actions during the war despite its outcome. While fictional, he is partly based on a historical "Hitokiri" who felt that the new direction of the Meiji Restoration betrayed the sacrifices of life on both sides. If you like any type of War history, this series really makes lots of references to the Bakumatsu era which is interesting to read.

This sounds really fascinating! At least I know what I'm gonna be watching once I'm all caught up to Majestic Prince.
