Seems like a really contrived explanation for the hand gesture when none was needed.

Peter actually has to double tap to release the webs, which was how the web shooter gadget he invented in the comic was done because he kept pressing it by accident. Many Spidey purists got mad when the movie made the webs organic, but I think they still followed the double tap rule.
