The 2012 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime is a great adaption of the first two arcs of my all time favorite manga series, and is definitely worth giving a watch, especially now that it's been announced that we're getting a new anime adaption of the third arc next year. Other than that, like a lot of people are recommending, Madoka's definitely a good choice, it was the first series I watched when I started seriously watching anime.

Another thing I'd personally recommend would be trying out some shows that are currently airing, you can find lists of what shows are airing online, so picking out a few that look interesting and giving them a try is a good way to start.
