By the time the Anime came around, the Pokemon concept had changed from living toys you bought in stores to the pet equivalents of the world, so releasing them was more akin to abandoning your dog or cat. It's easy to see why it's demonized.

That's where the franchise has been put into a rock and a hard place. We don't abandon our pets, but we also don't keep hundreds of them in boxes or send our dogs to cockfight other dogs.
