Man J is a weirdo, but I like the way they balance his goofiness with actual serious goings on. It was an interesting choice to introduce J and Jin's mechs as CGI, but I preferred it. It was probably the best introduction of a mech in the franchise, other than Ace's and Dragon Star-Lord's intro. I also love the teams balance, Hiromu trusts his team to get the job done, and doesn't need to do absolutely everything himself.

I don't get this Avatar stuff though, if they are just projections from Hyperspace how come they can interact with our world like everyone else?

It's probably something akin to Solid Light, following a similar logic that the one that is used to transport the weaponry.

Alternate option: J is a green lantern and the avatar one of his constructions.
