I was thrown every time they used their weapons or transformation devices. The animation style would flip from stylized/cartoony 2D cell animation to hyper-detailed/photo-realistic 3D CGI just to showcase the items. It wasn't the quantity of product placement that bothered me, it was the quality and how distracting it was within the show.

You have to remember that Sailor Moon codified that particular archetype. At the time, Usagi was a pretty unusual portrayal of a girl in Japanese media. It's only cliched now because Sailor Moon was so influential.
