1. Oh I know, and I'm not trying to argue that Yggdrasil is not artificially forcing the crack to stay open. But you have to admit it is suspicious that the crack they are keeping open is literally opening up into the ancient Sacred tree. Which they uprooted right the moment they took over the city and according to Kaito, "When I was a kid, a shrine grove was here. There was a sacred tree as well as a shrine for protecting it However no one remembers that anymore. The Shrine was torn down and the grove was cleared away" And what does Yggdrasil love doing more than clearing away plant life and anything that hints at Helheim's existence and manipulating what the citizens of Zawame know(well, besides using kids for guinea pigs XP)?
This screams to me that the land Zawame city is located has always been closely linked to Helheim long before Yggdrasil came, with the Sacred tree possibly being a natural gate. With my theory that the shrine(and festival) instead of being meant to protect the Sacred tree like Kaito and Mai said, was actually made to protect earth from Helheim invading it(after all we've seen how invasive it is). The problem was Yggdrasil for whatever reason destroyed that protection, forced the connection between the worlds to stay open artificially and now have to deal with the consequences.
2. I would totally believe that the cliff is related to the battle from the first episode. Honestly my 'theory' on what Mitchi saw is just a wild guess based on what I think Helheim is XP
