If the viewer enjoys a show better without the episodes that don't advance the story -- and his priority is enjoyment -- I think skipping episodes is a very valid way to watch a series he otherwise wouldn't have enjoyed.
If the viewer wants to have an authoritative opinion on the entirety of the show -- watching the complete product is obviously better.
Keep in mind that almost all weekly TV shows -- especially ones aimed largely at children -- are designed to be enjoyed even if you miss an episode here or there. Sure, you may not get the
entire
experience, but you are getting
a
valid experience.
I bristle at the suggestion that any one way to watch a show is "wrong," so long as the viewer enjoys himself.
That's sort of what gets me though. If you have to skip episodes, and not just a couple but what amounts to a sizable portion of the show, doesn't that sort of imply there isn't much enjoyment to be found in the show? This isn't a knock against people who do that, but it's just a perspective I've never been able to wrap myself around. (though now I do see Locke seems to enjoy his viewing, the take I got on his posts about the show just seemed to be very negative, so I was legitimately wondering why anyone would continue to watch something they didn't enjoy for so long) For instance, in other forums I've visited, many people will often watch every modern Kamen Rider and Super Sentai just to say they've seen it, that authoritative perspective, and that's one that has always boggled me when it means there sitting through something you absolutely can't enjoy. (which is probably why I'll never be able to finish the first Garo season or Go-Onger)
With me and Shinkenger, I don't think it's an outright bad show, but it's a very poorly paced one. That's a perspective that you can't have firsthand without drudging through the so-called filler of the show, which brings about the idea of having a full experience. Coming from someone who really enjoys the production side of things, I just think every episode should be given a fair shot due to the work that goes into it, with the caveat that it's within a show you either enjoy or see some sort of merit to. (there are shows I will watch just for the spectacle of whatever I feel might be going wrong) Which I guess goes back to what my stance on experiencing a show: firsthand lends itself to a more robust understanding of a show. (though I get that's not something everyone wants, but as a content creator myself, it's something ingrained into my thought process)
