All aboard!
**We've got so many images that this bad boy takes up 80 images across two posts! Scroll down to the second post of this thread to see the second half!
DX ToQ Oh is of course from everyone's favorite new train themed sentai,
Ressha Sentai ToQger.
And though we're only 3 episodes into the series it's already shaping up to be a really fun rider But enough about that, onto the toys!
DX ToQ Oh
is composed of the 5 main
Resshas
(trains) from the series. Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, and Pink Resshas. Plenty of people have expressed concerns that this mecha both on screen and in toy form is plain and simplistic. Let me assure you it is
neither.
To start with the Ressha's themselves are more complex than one would initially think. Out of the box they are each one long train piece with no moving parts. However, in the midsection of each Ressha is a really nice square connecting joint. Some pressure tabs hold these joints in place but I can safely say they are some of the sturdiest connections you'll find on a sentai robo. When released you can flip out an alternate tab underneath the peg that can hitch the two "cars" of each Ressha together. Thus giving them a moveable joint in the middle like the linkage between real rail cars. This joint is what also allows you to remove the main engine of each Ressha, to use them with the
DX ToQ Changer.
That's right, each forward section of the Resshas is fully compatible with the Changer. Small sets of tabs placed at varying intervals on the bottom of each car determine how the Changer detects them. Of course the secondary cars can not be used in this manner. But more to the point the joints in the middle of each train allow you to create one very long vehicle. These trains may be small but they more than make up for it in functionality.
While the size has been a point of contention with this set, reasonably so, in hand you really don't notice. This set really needs to be seen in person to appreciate it. Neither my pictures nor baltmatrix's review can really get the point across the same way actually handling it would.
To combine the resshas for ToQ Oh you can 100% mimic the TV counterpart. The Resshas line up in a row, then very nice very awesome sliding locks on either side of the Blue & Green Resshas slide right into place on Red. These are
very
firm connectors and Bandai NEEDS to use them more. Pink & Yellow have fold out peg joints to plug into the shoulder so that's pretty straightforward. Then we need to do the naughty bit of the transformation and fold up Red Ressha. Some traditional Bandai DX clips hold this piece in place but the ammount of force needed to use them is minimal. We probably won't see the same kinds of breakage occur like last year with Kyoryuzin. And in fact these clips are strategically
placed all over ToQ Oh.
We will most certainly be seeing some big combos when other Ressha are introduced. The clips on the bottom of both feet, the sides of the legs, and the tops of shoulders strongly imply this.
Now you just need to fold the feet up and rotate the hands. The feet by the way have a pair of locks on them so they don't rotate while the robot is standing, much like DX Gosei Great. Again very smart, and very secure, thanks Bandai! Then rotate the shoulder pads down, stand him up, fold the second half of Red Ressha down, and pop the head up! Oh and open the awesomely detailed train "doors" that conceal the head, and
ToQ Oh
is formed! There's also the included train crossing themed sword
Fumikiriken.
Nicely enough it can be stored on Red Ressha while in vehicle form.
Looking at this set as a whole I am impressed, damn impressed. Bandai has cleverly engineered this thing. It's as efficient as it can be and really pulls off the look of it's show counterpart. Could it have elbows? Sure, but then you would loose the separating pivoting joint the cars use in train form. Overall this is a very impressive piece that still stacks up well to the last few years of sentai DX robos. If anything it's size is indicative of much larger combinations to come just like the DX Go-Buster Ace of 2 years ago.
I
HIGHLY
recommend you pick this set up. The Ressha modes are really well done with absolute mountains of detail and the Robo mode is a joy to see and handle. A+ Bandai!
