That's the crux of what I was trying to say.
I totally didn't mean that SS is for grown ups. Just watch a few seconds and anyone can see that's untrue.
What I meant to highlight was that Japanese film makers have been working with Tokusatsu as an art for decades longer than the West has. Surely they know/have more tricks than the West? On the flip side, you could say that we have every chance to draw on toy-oriented western non-toku stuff, but I think Saban proves that not everything translates well across genres.
But it's as you say. After all having more experience in the genre does not necessarily mean that super sentai is any less prone to toy fixation than power rangers. They
could
do great things (Gaim proves that for me), but the bottom line shows them they don't need to.
Ah well, right?
It's still fun for the most part.
I'm hoping Gaim will mark the flip back towards "quality show sells toy", when the high ups realise what's possible... unless of course Gaim does poorly by the end of its run... I'm not really keeping up with the numbers.
