They're just as secure as a PIN or signature really, you should cancel a card if its stolen/lost no matter what, so I don't really see any reason for concern. At Supermarkets and stuff, at least in Australia, a PIN or signature is still required for payments over $100 for double security.

That said, I work part time at a Supermarket while studying and if I had a dollar for every customer to freak out about how unsafe they were and blah blah, I'd be the richest man in the galaxy. Still, its not like Swiping and Inserting aren't still options.

I live in the US and have never seen anything like that before.
