All of these episodes had a running theme o the rangers dealing with their families, while the Rin Jyuken users switch styles to Geki Jyuken.
37 had Ran dealing with her mother who wanted to set her up with a (big surprise) marriage interview. I hear these are a running thing in tokusatsu, though I've only really seen one of these in Ryuki...though come to think of it, Kiva might've had one. At any rate, it was still pretty funny seeing the other Gekirangers attempts to get her out of it plus we get a bit of Ran's background. Seems she had trouble standing up to her mother and decided to take up Geki Jyuken after meeting Shafu, quitting the track team her mother wanted her to be on.
Fairly standard plot with her having to explain to her mother what she's really doing by fighting for justice as a Gekiranger but still enjoyable.
38 was one about sibling disputes between Retsu and Gou. I'm sort of conflicted here. On one hand, I can understand Retsu's wanting to eat the pork specifically with one of the other food items in the soup. On the other hand, Gou's sort of right about Rtsu beign too picky. If he wanted to eat the pork with the other item, he should've just done so not put it off to the side.
But really, this episode was alright, even if it sort of hinged on the other Gekirangers aside form Retsu and Gou being easily tricked by imposter Retsu. Though his excuses weren't too bad. Cool to have a scene where Gou figures out his brother has been replaced by an imposter using brotherly instincts and whatnot.
39 was all about Miki and Natsume. Natsume must've really gotten along with Jan more so than the other Gekirangers if she chose to stay at his place when she ran away form home. And on that note...Jan has an apartment?! I mean, I guess he has to stay somewhere, but they never really showed where the rangers actually live other than Rio and Mele I guess...
And between this episode and the gang one you really shouldnt' fuck with Miki. I mean I knew she knew Jyuken, but she's strong enough to hold off Mele until she went ot Gen Jyuken mode and she can pilot Sandai-Oh just fine too!
Overall, the Gekiranger parts of the episode seemed sort of fillerish, but they were pretty fun. And oh man, the Rin Jyuken/Gen Jyuken parts. Long seems to have taken the role as then ext mentor, but he's still shady as shit. The Gen Jyuken users are practitioners of mythical beast fighting styles.
So far there's been a basilisk, a minotaur, a unicorn, a pixie, a chimera and...I'm not sure what the boar looking guy's supposed to be. I'm pretty knowledgeable on mythical creatures and he's drawing a blank at what he was.
The Gen Jyuken special techniques are terrifying as shit though. One can replace you with a mirror clone in an attempt to trap you in a mirror world forever and the other mind controls children. What kind of fucked up martial arts are these?!
Basilisk kind of annoys me, but it's more of the subs insistence to add yo to everything he's saying. I guess, there's no way to translate it directly, but there has to be a better way that doesn't involve making him sound like a parent i nan awful nineties movie attempting to sound 'cool'.
Mele's Gen Jyuken form looks pretty cool. Weird that it's phoenix based when she was a chameleon before...I mean the most logical step next would seem like a dragon, but given his name, Long obviously has that spot taken. Still, like I said it's looks cool. She's pretty much has the upper hand on the Geki rangers now because, as Jan said, this is essentially her Super Geki form. And apparently, it makes her stomach cramped according to Bae.
And the big reveal as to who was in the coffin. The Chimera fighter is the former White Tiger that was a student alongside Rio and probably Gou! But he's apparently become nothing more than a mindless husk that only knows battle now. Hope this changes soon, because this is an interesting new dynamic.
And lastly...in 39 they've replaced the ending song, it seems with character songs for it and the following episodes. One for each Gekiranger and Rin Jyuken users...who are arguably also rangers anyway. First up was Jan's...and well...it's how you'd expect a song by Jan to turn out, but I was in a hurry as it started playing, so I didn't get to hear much of it anyway.
Time for fun facts!
1. Retsu's evil twin is the actors twin brother in real life. You might also know him as Takuma/Akiba Red #2 from Akibaranger.
2. All of the Genjyuken users styles are based on the Chinese Zodiac. Some are obvious like Long's Dragon Fist and Mele's Phoenix Fist, but otheers like Suugu's Chimera First(Tiger) and Sanyo's Basilisk Fist(tortoise) are more of a mythological take on a particular Zodiac.
