Don't feel too bad. What you've basically become is a Star Trek fan. In Star Trek nothing is canon except the movies and TV shows, so all those books, comics, video games released every year? Non-canon. Doesn't mean we can't still enjoy them, though.

In a way I feel this is good. EU is fun, but the movie-makers should never be beholden to them, because it has become quite a severe mess especially the post ROTJ ones (at least in my opinion). Better to start fresh. I too have spent years and dollars, but it's not wasted. We enjoyed those stories, so it doesn't change anything.
