It wouldn't be irrelevant if he stayed alive. Remember,he was looking for the truth,but also revenge. If he lived,then he would have backed Serizawa by saying to let them fight because to him it would have been "Good,they could destroy each other!" and at some point have had Godzilla save people from these monsters.

You saw the scene where Ford and Godzilla came face to face? How much more impactful would it have been if Cranston was in Ford's place? How would you have felt if he just yelled at Godzilla and Godzilla just gave a look of "I'm sorry" and just turned to fight the MUTO's with a renewed spirit of "The King of Monsters,Protector of Humanity"

Also,I agree with everything said here. I loved the movie,but it had it's flaws.
