Sorry for the Double post
Gundam 00: Awakening of the Trailblazer
I love this movie. I don’t care what you say about me, I loved this movie. The last 3rd of the movie was beautiful and I’m glad this timeline ended this way.
Alright, time to address the biggest complaint this movie has. Character development. Only Setsuna really develops as a character.
But I do like how his Innovation and development allows him to sense more emotional things rather then only being a better pilot, where season 2 ended off. And, not to get too deep into symbolism mode, I think Setsuna represents the growth of humanity. When he’s very young, he engages in religious war over ideals and fights for his country (Much like how early history was spent fighting fighting other peoples of other ideals and empires/countries.) As Setsuna gets older, he fights to unite the will of humanity and ( I think the end of season 2 even says the childhood of humanity ends and Setsuna’s about 20 or 21 by the end of season 2, when Japan really considers you a proper adult.) And so many years into the future, he fuses with the ELS(Like how once we encounter aliens in peace, we fuse our wills so both of our species survive longer). Honestly though, I don’t think this movie needed any other character development.
Let me explain.
What development occurs to the characters in 00 happens because of some person in their past that they’re trying to move past or someone they need to understand..I don’t think you could really do anymore with these characters, they get past these hangups with the people that scared them by the end of season 2, so they don’t need to carry it over to the movie. Plus, you can’t really develop the characters because of the ElS because, well the ELS weren't personal. They fused with people with quantum brainwaves, but they weren't after selfish personal desires or driven by revenge, or frankly, anything that drove any of 00 the series’ villains. And if they did do something personal to one of the Meisters, then people would complain about the fact that it would be an unnecessary repeat of development from earlier in the series. Along with that, everybody in Celestial Being shared the same goal of trying to peacefully communicate with the ELS because that was something they all had in common anyways, so you really couldn't develop that either.
My complaints are very minor. The only new character is Descartes Shaman and he really doesn’t do anything. I guess he’s supposed to show humanity is evolving but I was hoping for more of a character. Maybe he could have joined Celestial Being once his ship got destroyed and piloted a rebuilt Raphael Gundam when Tieria and Setsuna were going to the dialogue? Oh and more Raphael Gundam please. That last battle not having it just left me unsatisfied. And the parts where the ELS were attacking people with quantum brainwaves after that ship crash were giving me Kamen Rider the Next flashbacks. And I mean the bad J-horror parts. There’s a minor Deus Ex Machina at the end of the movie, the 00 Quanta teleporting to the ELS solar system and that might be a logic breaker for some people but it might have happened after the ELS stopped anyways so I don’t mind as much.
The action was ridiculously crazy. Beautiful detail, lasers everywhere, fast moving suits, the ELS felt alive in battle just amazing. i think the only thing missing was the ELS suits going Trans-Am. I don’t particularly care for the new Gundam designs, but that’s just me. And most of the battles aren’t traditional mobile suit vs mobile suit either, the movie opens its first real fight with destroying a ship, and its super awesome.
Overall, I give this movie a 9/10
