As someone said Watch the original and once you understand it's message watch the American Cut. (The american cut is actually quite exceptional....but it throws you into the deep end of the pool emotionally speaking right at the start) My wife has seen the Japanese cut several times with me and understood the film....I tried to show her the American cut but we had to turn it off because she was crying within the first 3 minutes.

Showa Era: Vs. King Ghidora, Monster Zero, Vs. Sea Monster (That chick is SO HOT!), Son of Godzilla, Destroy all monsters, Vs. Hedora, Vs. Gigan, Vs. Mechagodzilla. Also Terror of Mechagodzilla....but make sure you have the most recent release...because everyother release cuts about 30 seconds at the end...and the ending makes NO SENSE without it.

Hesei Era: All of them. but especially Vs. Biollante & Vs. Space Godzilla (That last one gets a lot of undeserved flack)

Millenium Era:..... Ehh, Final Wars....I guess.
