Actually Zyuranger too was on the edge of being cancelled.
According to Weekly Georgia's interview with Shirakura (web magazine, mobile only) the sponsors had the red flag up to cancel the show already. Shirakura and a couple of new staff actually got permission from the sponsors and Toei, fired the chief director (who was also Kikaider series's chief director) at the time, and broke the 'industry rule' of having 'odd numbers team only' (3, 5, or 7 members) by adding a single permanent member.
The decision was successful, and the sponsors were happy with that.
Downside of the decision was many of the old producers and directors left the company due to Shirakura's action.
