Yeah, it does seem to be quite polarizing. I watched it based on a recommendation, but I wasn't that impressed. I certainly didn't dislike it at all, I just felt like it didn't live up to the potential that it had to be something new and unique. It just felt to me like the majority of the characters and the world itself was underdeveloped. It's a shame too, because the world was great and I found the supporting characters interesting. Kirito himself was honestly my biggest issue with the show, I just found him kind of generic and I didn't like how he was so overpowered that he just beats everything with basically no challenge at all. All of that being said though I did enjoy the show for the most part, and from what I've seen of SAO II so far I think it's a definite improvement.
