I can see a prime time-ish show using a more grounded look, like the kind found in Kamen Rider the First/Next. "Tokusatsu" has existed and does relatively well in western markets. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Charmed, Angel, Vampire Diaries, all those "fairy tale" based shows, Teen Wolf to a degree etc.
The idea of a "super" human dealing with monsters of the week, be it by solving mysteries or simply defeating them with fisticuffs, has been around and proven to work. The big difference is that most of them don't put on any disguises. Which is why something like First/Next might work due to the minimalist costume.
Sadly, while Power Rangers has become super profitable for the companies involved, it's also left a terrible stigma on the genre.
Nonetheless, I think an original series that's competently produced, can be viable. Of course, if it's all/mostly original content, then the question becomes, "Why bother with getting the rights to the name?"
As for a children's series, sure, Kamen Rider could work. Probably not Kiva or Den-O, due to the sensitivity of parent groups. Since both these series have "demonic" imagery. Gaim would work, but I wouldn't want it. The fruit imagery isn't the problem. Heck, fruits can be marketable. The problem is simply that the story would likely be reduced to a shadow of it's former self. Double is a viable series.
