I would spend time going through the series FAST, and spend the rest if the time reading the corresponding novels. That way not only I can re-organize the images in my head, but also get the extra fillers make a better picture of the entire chapter.
When you have to read novels to get the whole picture instead of just supplementing it, it's called bad storytelling. I have watch series or movies that have tie in novels, but the novels only supplement the original series/movie and does not intrude in any way if you do not read it. I have no problem if it was actually designed as mix-media franchise like K (annoying as that kind of project may be), but GARO is definitely not one of them and putting extra info on novels, does not make it a good series. Not everyone enjoy having to read supplemental materials, even if I know there are some HUGE fanboys who does that. Some people like to be entertained by what's on the screen and honestly, if they can't write a good, coherent story without supplement materials, they failed as a writer in my eye.
A good showrunner should have the ability to at least make a series consistent so it would not be confusing for viewers, without having to read tie-in novels. Especially people who don't give a shit for those kid of things. A good writer should be a able to write the story that are in the original spirit of said series even if they have a particular kind of writing style. There are series' that have different writers but have a rather consistent feel and are not confusing for viewers even without supplemental materials.
As an aspiring writer myself, I can say GARO has some example of bad storytelling
