I was okay with the designs and the action but in retrospect the ending....*scratches head ... yeah.

That's just one of the elements. Here's a list of things TMNT '14 and The Amazing Spider-Man have in common, story-wise:

*Superpowered blood as major plot point
*Serious daddy issues brought on by asinine secret-keeping
*Main character has answers hidden away that they forgot about until movie story began
*Villain's plan involves exposing large portions of the city to airborne toxin
*Entire final battle takes place atop skyscraper antenna that contains said toxin which heroes must stop with barely any time remaining.
