I can agree that Kabuto wasn't as heavy with the plot, but that seemed less a plan from the outset and more the fact that Kabuto completely fell apart in its third act and frequently seemed like the writers had no idea what they were doing anymore past a point (that point, conveniently, being when a cursed kitchen knife came into play).

Ryuki was planned from the start and seemed to more-or-less follow a planned route and succeed, whereas the impression I get from Kabuto is that the writers spent 10 episodes laughing at the Dark Kitchen arc before remembering they had to write the end of the show.
