What makes Energon stand out is that it had a story to tell and completely failed at doing so, in addition to it's poor animation and weak script.
G1 is just a product of it's times. A show made to sell toys with episodes that only existed to showcase the newest toys on the shelves.

While Transformers as a franchise is made to sell toys, series from Beast Wars onward had stories to tell and weren't just vehicles (Pun not intended) for more products.
