You do realize that the entire arc of the Evangelion series (after ep 10) was a direct reflection of him having a mental breakdown right? He was dealing with the tragic death of his mother (and other family members). Needless to say he was NOT right in the head.

The two movies produced after the anime air were pretty much a response to the fans saying that the last two eps were 'dumb' and 'didn't fit the tone of the show'.
So he said (and I'm quote here): "fine. you want dark? I'll give you dark".

The rest is "WTF?" history.
