You also missed the primary point. Their inclusion doesn't take away a spot for someone else, but the the time worked on them could've been devoted to another. Sakurai explained that making a clone character wasn't just "Copy. Paste. Alter color effects" and that it still takes up lots of time to ensure they're not identical to the primary character.
By wasting the time on 4 modified characters just to pad out the roster size rather than 1 creative character all their own, you can't see why people get upset?
