I don't think clones should be added over more unique characters, but there's no evidence that's ever happened and your quote sounds like a slight exaggeration.

Sure, if you removed every single clone character the developers might then have had time to have included, what? One completely unique character? Maybe? I'm just not sure that's a fair trade off when we're dealing with characters like Lucina and Dark Pit who are incredibly popular with fans (even if they have a fair amount of vocal haters in certain communities) and they probably required little work beyond tweaks that wouldn't exactly require the whole development team. And that's not even mentioning the likes of Falco and Luigi who are series staples at this point. It's really not as cut and dry as you're implying.

We haven't see them talk about anyone else ever being considered but cut in favour of hashing out some more clones, so anything you say is speculation. Nintendo are well known for holding back games if they don't feel they're finished, so if they thought someone else should have been in the game, I'm sure they would have delayed it to fit them in.

This all just sounds like it's people again getting upset that their favourite character wasn't included.
