trust me, the old school fans are the most fair weather I have ever seen.
And yet I still love Persona 1 after all this time. Really though all of the Atlus artists have their strengths and weaknesses. Kaneko does the best creature/persona designs but his humans look very lifeless. Soejima does better people but he doesn't seem to put the same effort into designing symbolically evocative Persona like Kaneko did.

I'm all for the old and new stuff, but I feel the old school fans need to get the stick out of their ass for a lot of things.
I don't think I'd call myself an old school fan since my first Megaten game was Strange Journey and I worked my way back from there. But I find that the older games have more, let's call it substance, than a lot of the newer games did. But the newer games benefit from years of improved design philosophy in some areas. So again, there are trade-offs to the pre and post PS2 era Megaten games.
I for one miss having a 6 man party in the Main line games since both SMT I and II do interesting things with that party size. It's not something I noticed my first time through SJ, but once I saw how the Law and Chaos aligned characters were actual party members and not these FF III esque attachments to the party it made me realize why I felt the interactions with characters like Jiminez/Zelenin in SJ, and Walter/Johnathan in IV seemed lacking.

Rant about Art Rants
I mean I can understand coming down on the people who won't shut up about the art differences between games but it's a fair point that there are some pretty hilarious, and also bad art decisions that have happened over the years. Do I need to post the graph? Because I still have that file on hand.

In hindsight, the original trailer doesn't say much of anything except that Atlus and Nintendo were still interesting in making a game. I don't know who made the decision to show-off every protagonist from every mainline SMT game and Fire Emblem game but it probably wasn't their best call.
Leaving fans to stew on that trailer for a couple of years didn't help either.

The actual reveal however showed a game that fused ideas from both worlds, yet looked like neither, it seems interesting for sure, but for those who hoped for grid based combat/demon negotiation/etc. it came out of nowhere.
Which is weird because the Megaten series, much like the Final Fantasy series, has visited the Tactical RPG genre in the past. Atlus and Intelligent Systems knows it can work but they went for what appears to be a turn based system instead of implementing a strategy game.
There's also the comparisons between the visual styles of the game and the Persona series. For people expecting similar visuals to the mainline SMT games (somewhere between cyberpunk and gothic horror) having a title set in yet another high school is a slap in the face.
I'll still play it, but until I can see something more about the gameplay it's the kind of game I'll wait for someone I know to get before I play it.
