And it is terribly confusing at points. Without looking up a wiki, I was confused as to what essential stuff like the Summer of Love and the Limit of questions was as the show just half hazardly explained this crucial lore. And now I've been hearing there are multiple branching timelines from the endings? And AO has some time travel BS? Good grief.

I feel like the show does a good job of explaining it's concepts, but the ending can come a little bit out of left field, particualry the last few minutes.

Macross is a tough one, as due to the Harmony Gold issues it can't be licensed, Plus however has been released, and I think it's on Hulu, Plus also happens to be one of the high points of the franchise, so it'd be a good place to start.

Code Geass is one of the common suggestions, political intrigue with rather realsitic mechs (at least in S1) and some supernatural elements for a fun and unqie ride.
If the idea of a crew of Super Robot loving goofballs stuck in a down to earth Real Robot show sounds fun to you, check Nadesico, it's both a deconstruction and a love letter to the mecha genre as a whole.
