Could be possible that Saban wants a connection to the TV series somehow. The reason for Star Trek's time travel method was so that they could establish a continuity with the TV series canon.

I'm still taking these rumours with a grain of salt. If only Saban and Lionsgate will just give more reveals. Admittedly it's still a long way off from the release date.
