Simply put, people may think making everything uber dark, violent, edgy, and sexy will get them a better and more serious product. But it won't. If you want proof of that just look at Shin or how many other shows or films that try to do it but end up looking like try-hards.

All of this is true. But on the other hand, censor something too much, or create something with vaguely bad consequences, and you get 4kids.

Honestly, I think the drive for "more mature" content comes from their regular censoring of things like One Piece and Yu-Gi-Oh (though to be fair, it's a show about children's card games that sometimes takes itself a bit to seriously). The more you comically dial back some more serious topics, the more a certain crowd will demand them, even if their own ideas for what exactly is "mature" may be utter nonsense or excessive in amount.
