Anyone feel like that the movie feels similar to the New Jedi Order series written lomg before Episode 7. Both had the idea of Han Solo having a son becoming a Sith lord. I can't help to notice between the similarities Kylo Ren and Jacen Solo aka Darth Caedus..

Kylo Ren is an amalgamation of the concepts of Lukes' EU son Ben Skywalker & Hans EU son Jacen Solo. Essentially they flip flopped the scenario where now Han & Leia only have one child, and I feel it's heavily alluded to that Rey is Luke's daughter. Hence her connection to the force. But back to Kylo, by his birth name being Ben they've basically appropriated the spiritual connection to the Eu and maintained the "descendant of Vader turns evil" trope. I thought it was a pretty brilliant way to rehash EU material with a new spin. It was also interesting that Han died rather than his son. As Darth Caedus, Jacen was killed by his sister Jaina. Which is why I doubt seriously any notion that he and Rey are siblings. That would be taking from the EU wholesale rather than reinventing that material as they've done.

And they do talk about how he falls to the dark side while training with Luke. They sent him away and as a result, because he was away form his mother & father, he was more susceptible to Snoke's influence. Which is how he became the monster he is today. While they glazed over it I found the explanation sufficient. They will of course flesh it out in Episode 8.
