If that part is genuine I have to say it may very well open up a redemption arc that might not feel forced if they also at the same time undo the mind wipe he seems to get in the clip.

My money is he did it KNOWING they would cure him and it will let him gain their trust, making them believe he is an ally. So the memories are gone... but it is all a setup.
