My issue with it was, you can see he's not quite comfortable playing the role. I kind of expect, based on Terajima's brand, that they'll eventually reveal he's hiding a more complicated past.

Why would Susumu Terajima playing a crazy man? maybe his character actually know the truth about Yamato but refuse to tell him a truth about him

His strange behavior is part of his facade
