Most of the time the changes were cosmetic, sometimes removal of chrome and or diecast in many cases.

This is true. Gingaioh contains a significantly greater amount of diecast than the US counterpart. And you're correct, sometimes plastic colors were different.

As far back as MMPR diecast parts were removed, labels were "westernized", and electronics have been known to be removed on some releases over the years too. Like the black/gold Astro Galactic Megazord which had it's electronics gutted. Bandai America has made changes to a number of releases dating back to the very beginning.
