So I have some thoughts on HoPR in general. I figure a public forum with a thread devoted to them is as good a place as any to "think out loud."
I've been a fan of Linkara for years. His first review I caught was Terminator vs Superman, and I've been a weekly viewer ever since. The whole History of Power Rangers series was sort of out of left field when it first came up. I didn't get into the franchise through HoPR, but it was what reintroduced me. I had stopped following around the cast changover during Turbo's first run. I would watch a few episodes here and there when I stumbled across them during my teen years, but mostly for the monster/robot fight pwrn.
HoPR started off as a neat nostalgic look back. Then I decided to give some of the post-Turbo shows a shot, to "catch up on what I missed." So thank you Linkara, if you're reading this. I thought I was out, and you pulled me back in
So some thoughts on the series as a whole...
I'm a bit disappointed that Linkara didn't mention the behind the scenes friction between JDF and ASJ. Especially given that it's an issue that still hasn't been resolved. I know that JDF flamewars are a thing, and Linkara likes to shy away from instigating them, but I feel like HoPR as a retrospective on the series is a bit incomplete without mentioning it. I feel like the "redone" MM retrospective videos would have been a good place to work that in.
I'm of the opinion that they should have used the Gosei Sentai Dairanger suits for season 2 of MM. It's purely an aesthetic preference. I just think they look cool.
I'm not feeling the love for In Space. Well...I kind of do. I understand why it's beloved and I won't tell anyone who likes it that they're wrong. It's just that, to me, the screwed up continuity of the team in Turbo really takes a lot out of the punch behind In Space's finale. This is the end of the Zordon era. And no one from the original team is there.
Bulk and Skull's "IT'S THEM?" reaction the team revealing that they're the Power Rangers just seems empty because these people really aren't anyone significant to them. Just imagine that scene if it were the original team. Or even the second iteration of the original team with Rocky, Adam, and Aisha. I understand that actors want to move on, and I commend the writers for making the best of a less than ideal situation. I just think the series is hurt a bit due to events unfolding the way they did.
Lost Galaxy is now probably my favourite season out of the whole lot. The sword and sorcery/Arthurian bent to the source material is right up my alley. I do wish they would have stayed closer to the source material. Maybe a MM prequel about Rangers fighting a threat on ancient/pre-historic/high fantasy Earth? I donno. Just an idea. Still? I really dug what we got.
Generally speaking I applaud Linkara's attempts to make sense of some unanswered questions with his own fan theories, but stuff like "time works differently in the PR universe" seems like jumping the shark a bit. Fan speculation is awesome, but sometimes you just gotta go "the creators done goofed."
I'm curious to see what Linkara has to say now that we know the reason why David Yost left the show.
I disagree with Linkara's criticisms of MF that centre on the "Nick was born into his destiny and that's a bad massage" argument.
Fact is that, despite our society's egalitarian nature, some people are born into certain situations that they have no control over. Be it responsibilities they never asked for, wealth, or poverty. A show that has the message of "sometimes you're born into a situation and you need to better yourself as a person to meet that situation head on" isn't elitist. It's a pretty good message.
It's also a season with a fantasy bent, and fantasy storytelling has deep roots in medieval traditions that do place a lot of emphasis on being born into your role in life. It's a trope that comes with the territory.
I've actually seen all of the neo-Saban series as they've aired, the first series I can say that for since the first part of Turbo.
I have a theory for Samurai that would explain why the team follows Japanese feudal customs without being Japanese. It doesn't fit, but it's still a fun though exercise. Here me out.
RPM doesn't take place in an alternate universe. It really was the apocalypse of the PR world. Humanity, for the most part, had to start from scratch afterwards. So the survivors would have these half-forgotten stories from the past and those would form the basis of myths going forward. So you could have a generally multiracial culture that discovered bits and pieces of feudal Japanese history and modelled their society after it.
Eighteen generations later (so FAR in our future)? Boom. Multiracial samurai that conform to Japanese customs. Of course Bulk's presence and the RMP crossover ruin it, but hey. It's an idea I had.
I'm excited to see what Linkara has to say about DinoCharge. Negative reviews can certainly be entertaining, but HoPR works best when Linkara is excited about the franchise.
Again, just some thoughts I had while watching the series.
