The term isn't exactly subjective. It's supposed to refer to something that's extremely hard to get, not something that you just want at the moment. You can have a list of "Grails" but the biggest factor is that unavailability is the key.

It's not really snobbery, it's just misuse of the term. Scarcity and price are both things that have to be put in mind when it comes to calling something a "Holy grail."

I still disagree. Someone's most wanted item is going to vary greatly depending on their available income. A person without two nickels to rub together is going to have far more modest goals because it's the way they learned to think about material things. Restricting it to some arbitrary tier of items and then lambasting people who choose to express a desire outside that is, in my book, flat out snobbery. Language shifts, for better or for worse, and I don't think the 'grail' designation is anywhere as near as rigidly defined as it's being made out to be. This is, I suspect, something we're going to have to end up just agreeing to disagree on.
