There's a difference though. Comic books are just random stories that only sometimes connect into a larger plot. Manga is ALWAYS a continuous plot. Comic books have also been going on for 75 years with a constant amount of reboots and rewriting going on with the characters. There is no set version of some of the characters. Manga is usually a single stand alone story that goes from start to finish in a certain amount of time.

There are comics that have a single stand alone stories and have continuous plots. Like various comics from Image/Top Cow, Dark Horse, Boom! Studios and Vertigo. Not all comics are apart of a company that has been around for almost a century.

For me, I watch things to be entertain. Even if I never read the original source material, I can still enjoy it as it's own. Like I never read the Godfather novel, but I love the first movie. I didn't play the video games of Danganronpa and I still found the anime to be enjoyable.
