Funny enough that's a story from a character in a story- that just made it up. Obviously making fun of how the Silver Age was full of ridiculous shock moments and stunts over actual substance, although mainly on DC.(Superman shooting rainbow versions of himself, Zebra colored Batman, fat flash, animal, baby, alien, mythical, talking whatever, etc.)

The industry just happens to be an unfunny parody of itself at times.
