Cute feminine girly girls and spunky action tomboy girls are both good, when written properly. The former gets flak because in the past it's often made the ONLY trait of the character, whereas the latter can often result in what amounts to a crossdressing macho man. Both suck. Want some good female characters? Katara and Toph from Avatar and the Mane 6 from MLP.
It's a good thing we have people like GoseiWonder to arbitrate the legitimacy of a group's concerns.
The "damsel in distress" trope has nothing to do with characters being "girly girls" or "action tomboys." Both of those traits can lead to well-rounded and humane characters.
No, the issue has to do with female characters being presented as objects to be won instead of legitimate human beings with their own agency and strength. This trope is a problem because many in the real world already view women as objects, and it perpetuates a toxic system of oppression.
It is not as big of a problem when men are presented in the same role because that toxic system of oppression does not apply to men in the real world as strongly as it does to women. Although, it is still lazy and dehumanizing, and the male damsel is something I think writers should be wary of as well.
In summation, the male/female (but especially female) damsel in distress trope is lazy and dehumanizing and should be avoided at all costs.
