In all honesty, I felt let down by Makai. It had some great standalone episodes, and the fight against Bootleg Garo was pretty cool, but it was missing something. First off, why did the villain never use the shadow armor again? It was a cool idea but it was only used the one time. Secondly, I am so sick of Kaoru and Kouga having their relationship dragged out. We know they love each other, but it seems like something as small as having lunch is epic between them because of how poor their relationship is written. Third, they brought in the girl who cannot act from Red Requiem. Fourth, something just seemed off about the fights, and the plot dragged on a little too much.

The first season was truly incredible because it had both style and substance to it. It had extremely memorable characters (Cerberus, Barago, Messiah, Echoes, the fish Horror, the butterfly Horror, the bar tender and her father, etc), but Makai really did not have anything outside of Leo. Honestly, even the stand alone episodes like the gambling one and the tree one, I do not remember most of the monsters or characters.
