Going with what is legally available is the truest option. That's like asking which anime series someone should start with. Are you going to go with something that is licensed and legally available or are you going to go with something that is fansubbed only? Hobbies cost money. If you want to get into something, you should be willing to spend money on it or don't do it at all. If there are legal options available, those should be where people are first directed. No one is entitled to get the series for free just because they aren't sure they are going to like it or not.
And honestly, $35 for a 50 episode series is nothing. Not only is that less than $1 per episode, something like that is rare, but it's only $35. I'm not telling them to go out and buy the $100 DVD volumes for a show.

This makes more sense now.

I heard Sentai was typically more kiddy than KR so seeing a MOTW blow up busses and cars when it's clear there are people was surprisingly contradictory to that statement
It depends on the series. The shows over the last 10 years have gotten way more kiddy than the ones before it. Gekiranger is probably the most adult in that time period, but even that has its childish moments.

Go-Busters rules. Watch that.
Hence why I recommended the DVDs Shout! has released. Not only do you get some of the best series Sentai has to offer, but you also support the official releases.
