I'm watching Record of Lodoss War (1990-1991 OVA) at the moment and I'm personally really enjoying it. The anime feels very similar to classic fantasy series like Lord of the Rings and D&D. Not to mention the animation from Mad House is great for something from 1990. I never saw this anime and only remember seeing a VHS copy of it at my local video store back in the late 1990's.
Other anime I finish watching recently:
Otaku No Video - I haven't seen this anime in almost a decade and I'm glad that I rewatch it. The humor is funny and the anime is filled with awesome pop culture references from the 60's-80's. Not a fan of the live action parts, but they are interesting. Otaku No Video is a lot of fun and can be rather educational seeing that it explores the realm of Japanese nerd culture. Modern anime day fans may view this anime as nothing special seeing that we have anime like Genshiken now. I suggest checking this anime out for any old school anime fan. Grade: B
Strait Jacket - Personally I really enjoy this anime a lot. Strait Jacket is no masterpiece, but I felt like the story and action are pretty well done. Reiott Steinberg is a very cool main character and Steven Blum's voice really work for his character. I feel the other supporting cast could have been better and I wish the back story was handle better. This anime has a lot of back story and it was hardly talk about. The animation still looks great after nearly a decade later when it was release in Japan. I also love the world that they created in the anime and the action was top-notch. Overall, I really like Strait Jacket and I recommended checking it out for any action anime fan. Grade: B+
Twilight Of The Dark Master - I thought this anime would be bad and I end up liking it. I love the dark, gritty and gothic art style that this anime has. I really miss the animation style that Mad House use to have with their older anime from the late 80's and 90's with their horror and darker action anime like with Wicked City, Ninja Scroll and several others. I also love how surreal that this anime can be at times too. I admit that the plot is pretty messy and somethings didn't make much sense, but the action is pretty awesome though. This anime has become a new guilty pleasure of mine and I won't mind seeing it again. Grade: B-
Wild 7 (1994 OVA) - This anime was a very fun anime to watch. This anime is not a great or good anime, but it is filled with great action from start to finish. This anime is very cheesy and over the top which reminds me of old exploitation outlaw biker films with the high levels of violence and cheesy dialogue. I also like that they try to have a social commentary with police brutality, the rise of militant student activists and political corruption. While the characters and story may be weak, Hiba is a fun action hero and I did enjoy the other 7 wild gang members. The music in this anime kicks ass too. I recommended watching this anime if you want something that is plain dumb fun. Grade: B+
