One less superficial thing that jumps out to me is the similarity of GENM to Yggdrasil (big companies that clearly have some connection to the monsters the world at large doesn't know about). Though Emu has friends that are "in the know" about the plot, which lowers the potential of him being jerked around the way poor Kouta was.

I think a lot of people forget that. It's overall tone may be very serious but the comic relief tried its best to "compensate". I think it may be even more over the top than Den-O in places. In my opinion, Gaim is basically the show that planted the seeds for guys like Onari.
