Saw this tonight. I usually prefer rooting for Godzilla instead of against him, but I loved this movie way more than I expected to. The film is cut in such a way so that it feels very fast paced despite how strongly dialogue and political decision making remains the focus. When you're told that this movie is primarily government officials talking to each other, I think you sort of expect it to be snoozefest, and while it may bore some people to tears I was shocked by just how invested I became in the drama.
Godzilla still looks ridiculous, and I still hate the long wiggly laser tail. That said, a few of his havoc wreaking bells and whistles were very entertaining and I loved the night scenes where the radioactive glow of his skin is especially visible. Most of the time I felt his motion was believable and it's clear where they utilized motion capture to make him appear more lifelike; all the same though, the few sequences where they obviously didn't use mo-cap are very apparent and kind of jarring. A couple of Godzilla's movements felt to me like I was watching our average janky ass Toku CGI with a higher budget, and it sometimes took me out of the action a little bit.
It also took me a hot minute to understand the imagery at the end of the film, but once I had, I thought the idea was pretty profound. Leaves me wondering if a sequel is even thematically possible, because I think it would ruin the message left behind here.
